Automotive Recyclers all across the state of New York have been helping this state protect its citizens and its environment for the past several years by participating in a program instituted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This program is the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program. This program is a unique collaboration between environmental organizations, automobile manufacturers and automotive recycling facilities to recover up to 90% of the mercury switches that were used in automobiles up until the year 2003.

Mercury auto switches were used in convenience lighting, antilock braking systems and some air bag sensor components. It has been estimated that there may be as many as 40 million mercury switches in vehicles, which are still in use.

Beginning in August of 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency and End of Life Vehicle solutions have worked in conjunction with New York automotive recyclers to recover as many of these mercury switches as is possible.

Mercury switches have been prohibited in the state of New York since January 1, 2008. According to the New York State Environmental Conservation Law article 27, Title 21, Mercury-added Consumer Products, section 27-2107(7) states: On or after January first, two thousand eight, no person shall sell, offer for sale or distribute any mercury switch or mercury relay individually or as a product component Cost effective, non-mercury replacement switches exist which use a ball bearing in place of liquid mercury to trigger the electrical connection.

The necessity to ensure that as many mercury containing switches as possible is related to the toxicity associated with mercury when consumed by humans. Mercury is a particularly toxic substance that can affect the brain and nervous system. Small children and pregnant women are particularly affected by mercury in the environment. Removing and recycling these mercury switches from vehicles before they are crushed and processed and recycling prevents the mercury from being released into the environment.

New York auto recyclers are taking an active role in making sure that the mercury that has been used in automobiles does not end up in New Yorks rivers and lakes where it contaminates the fish and wildlife. Eating mercury-contaminated fish is the primary route of exposure for most people. The problem has become bad enough in the state of New York that the New your State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued multiple health warnings for New York residents about the amount of consumption of fish. Dangerous mercury levels in fish in some lakes and streams could lead to a negative impact on tourism from people traveling from out of state to fish in New Yorks popular streams and lakes.

The national Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program is committed to assisting auto recyclers in New York and nationwide by ensuring that auto salvage facilities do not have to bear any of the financial burden for any of the costs associated with storing, shipping and processing the mercury convenience switches they remove from the vehicles they process.

As part of a nationwide program that began back in August of 2006, Georgia auto recyclers have really made a significant contribution in the effort to ensure that switches that contain mercury do not find their way into the environment. The program was instituted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to recover 80-90 percent of the mercury switches from scrap automobiles. The National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program attempts to address the growing problem of mercury air emissions. This is primarily related to furnaces that are used to melt existing scrap steel for the purpose of recycling the steel back into industrial use. It is estimated that over 40 million mercury containing switches are currently still in vehicles that have been or will be scraped over the next 8 years.

Last year Georgias automotive recyclers were involved in the recovery of the one millionth mercury switch through the efforts of this program. In February of 2008, one of the nations top environmental officers visited the state of Georgia for the sole purpose of pulling this switch. The event occurred at an auto recycler located in DeKalb County. The United States Environmental Agencys top official, Stephen Johnson was joined by United States senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Iasakson for the monumental event.

The use of mercury in switches for convenience lights in automobiles was a common practice throughout the last half of the twentieth century. The practice was phased out in 2003. Most often used in the switches of an automobiles truck and hood lights, the mercury contained within these switches can be transferred into the atmosphere when the vehicle is crushed for recycling.

At the present time the recovery rate appears to be at only 20% nationwide, however the Environmental Protection Agency hopes to improve that rate with the Mercury Switch Recovery Program. The EPA is working in conjunction with the End of Life Vehicles Solution Corporation to increase the compliance rate to at least 80%. ELVs is a nonprofit organization comprised of 13 auto manufacturers to assist and encourage auto recycler participation. With this program, automotive recyclers do not bear the financial burden of any of the costs associated with storing, shipping and processing the mercury convenience switches they remove from the vehicles they process.

Automotive recyclers can also qualify for monetary incentives. A four million dollar fund is in place to reimburse auto recyclers $1 for each mercury switch that is collect and turned in.

Though the program is voluntary in nature, Georgias automotive recyclers have been active participants in the program to date. There are approximately 200 automotive salvage yards and scrap dealers in the state and 70 of these are current participants. The program is scheduled to run through the year 2017 when it is felt that most automobiles that contain these switches will have been retired from use. Once the $4 million fund has been exhausted, automotive recyclers will still continue to receive support in the program at no cost to themselves.

Time has passed and the same old job situation has you down. The life you are living is much like a sad country song. It’s not what you had imagined, and you don’t like your day job one bit. Maybe it was a friend that shared with you the power of auto tech schools, or it could be that you have done your homework and know what auto tech schools can do for someone who is interested in a career change. Regardless of the reason, the time has come to give auto tech schools a serious look, and find out what it is they have to offer, and which schools fit your needs best.
It is important to look only at the Automotive Technology schools that are near you, because commuting is too much of a hassle for most students. The fact is that most auto tech schools require long hours of hard work. This is not conducive to major commuting. For this reason it would be wise to set a standard; to look at those auto tech schools that are no more than 1 hours drive away from your current home. This is the first step in narrowing down the process. Of course if you look at auto tech schools online, that would eliminate any commute whatsoever.
Next it is imperative to look at what you want out of the programs you may apply to, or you are thinking about attending. What degrees, certifications, or other things do you want out of auto tech schools? Thinking about this in advance will also help narrow down your search to the ones that best fit your criteria. Locating the best auto tech schools can be a challenge if you live in a rural area, but it is important to keep your needs in mind, no matter how small the selection of auto tech schools. Further, it is important to look at the ranking of the auto tech schools you are looking at by the people that have attended the school. Is it a high-ranking school in terms of satisfaction and instruction? Is it one that offers students a real chance at learning about the industry? Answering these questions will give you a better perspective of which auto tech schools will work for your needs.
Most importantly the program choose must have a strong career placement program. Finding auto tech schools that offer strong career placement should not be hard, since most of these schools count this as one of the top priorities of the school. After all if one is not getting a job after attending the programs offered, what is the point in making the career change? The auto tech schools or tech schools are simply in existence to give people a chance at a better life, by providing a solid education, and then supplying a list of employers to the student for consideration.
The auto tech schools with the strongest career placement rates should be at the top of your list for attendance possibilities. Career placement rates are simply calculated by taking the total number of graduates, and getting the number of auto tech school graduates that are placed into a job. This will give you the placement percentage. Most auto tech schools use this simple formula to calculate career placement rates. If a school has 100 graduates, and 80 are placed in jobs, the career placement rate for those auto tech schools would be 80%. This isn’t a bad rate, given that a few students will surely change their mind and decide a different career path.

If you are seeking a career in the automotive industry, going to school is an excellent way to break into the field. Auto tech schools offer a number of resources for students, helping them to find a job after graduation, or even while still in school. Read on to discover a few of the benefits you will enjoy as a student at an automotive school.

Experienced teachers
Most auto tech schools hire only the best teachers. In order to ensure their teachers really know the subject material, they look for those with automotive degrees and/or real working automotive experience. As a result, you can rest assured that your teachers are some of the best resources available to you as you learn the ropes of the field.

Strong mentoring programs
Many automotive programs understand the value of a mentor as a student gains an education and work experience. Therefore, many schools will set up a mentoring program, between new students and more experienced students, or simply between students and experienced members of the industry.

Broad availability of internships
Another advantage offered by auto tech schools is the availability of internships. Most automotive schools maintain ongoing working relationships with local automotive businesses, enabling them to quickly and easily place students in internships. Internships benefit students by providing valuable on the job training, and some even give students credit toward their degree.

Guaranteed job placement
Many programs will guarantee job placement after graduation. Job placement services are one of the many benefits a high quality, established automotive school can offer. Between the connections the school has with local shops, garages, and dealerships, and the aid of the school’s best resume writers, students should have no trouble finding work in this competitive field.

Solid school reputation
One of the benefits to attending one of the top auto tech schools is that you carry with you the value of their reputation, every time you present your resume or tell a customer where you learned your trade. The presence of a top school on your resume could even make the difference between landing a job and losing it to another candidate. Therefore, a school’s reputation must be counted among one of the resources it offers you as a graduate.

Financial aid
Going to school is a financial burden for many people, but it doesn’t have to stop you from getting the education you want and need. Many facilities will offer financial aid for students who cannot easily afford to put themselves through school. Financial aid is therefore a resource that makes an education possible for many people for whom it would not have been otherwise.

There are many more resources that auto tech schools can offer to their students, but the above resources are the most common. If you are unsure what resources a certain educational program can offer to you, the best way to find out is to browse the school’s website or contact them directly.

You may have your own auto dealership that offers services from vehicle repair to simple purchases of Suzuki auto parts and the like. But your business is sure going to spurt more when you hear about the new program that would help you gain more customers and more income as well.
This new program is called the Rapid Response program and it has been launched by Autobytel Inc which is considered as one of the automotive world’s leading Internet marketing services company. The Rapid Response program is actually one of the first from the company’s Keep in Touch, or KIT, services that has been created so as to help dealers be able to successfully manage their shops and at the same time be also able to communicate with any of their customers needs online.
As per the Rapid Response, just by the name itself, you would know that this is some really fast type of service. Sure enough, according to Autobytel, this program actually initiates phone calls to any Autobytel member auto dealers to notify them within seconds about a customer’s inquiry on vehicles’ price quotes. And with this type of service, many auto dealers have said that indeed, the Rapid Response has helped many dealers have better customer satisfaction rates and even better sales.
Mark Garms, the senior vice president of dealer operations for Autobytel, even is satisfied by Rapid Response. He expresses, “The goal of Rapid Response is to put our dealers on the phone with the customer so quickly that the customer is literally still sitting at the computer. Obviously, that sets the stage for better contact rates, but it also creates new opportunities for dealers to interface online with customers, for example by leading them through a virtual inventory walk around or showing them different color or trim options.”
Even Mike Bromer is satisfied for he says, “Rapid Response puts my sales team in a prime position to speak with Internet customers immediately after they have decided to buy or learn more. That automated connection has completely transformed our online sales process by breaking it out of the computer, so to speak, and putting it in real time, in the real world.” Bromer is currently the general manager of Continental Honda.

There are only five ways to increase the bottom line of a business: Sell more vehicles, practice price elasticity (get more gross profit per sale), create more repeat customers, increase the speed of the buying cycle for your current customers, and create continuity programs by getting the customer to continually do business with you (service, add-on selling etc.). Although all are important, one can be obtained instantly and with a huge impact – price elasticity and the ability to increase gross profits. There are four critical areas to increasing your gross profit. The first stage is in the sales process. There is an old saying that “sales people control numbers and managers control gross profits.” I definitely disagree with that saying. You must create rapport, find the customer’s real or perceived problem, identify the customer’s hot buttons, communicate and listen to the customer, find the right vehicle, give a tailored presentation/ demonstration that creates an emotional bond, encourage a proposal and have a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards your customer and the sale before gross profit can occur. The best manager cannot help a sales person create gross profit if those things have not occurred. The manager must act as a check point to make sure that all these things occur before giving a proposal. Have you ever been in a meeting where the manager is talking about selling value and not price? I’m sure you have been in one of those meetings where, after you left, the first thing you were asked when you brought a customer proposal sheet to the manager was “What payment do they want to be at?” and “How much money do they have down?” Obviously these questions are based upon money, not value.Try developing 10 questions that double check the sales process before you discuss figures. The following is a potential list:1. Has the customer driven the vehicle?2. What does the customer like or dislike about the vehicle?3. Does the customer live/work near here?4. Has the customer done business here before? Service or Sales?5. Describe the customer’s trade-in6. What does the customer like or dislike about their current vehicle?7. Does the customer have a current or past payment on the vehicle? If there is or was a payment, how much? If the customer paid cash for the vehicle, how much did they pay?8. If the customer has a payoff, how much is it and how many payments are left?9. What is the customer’s Hope For Gain (HFG) in this purchase?10. Who is the primary driver? Are there any secondary drivers? If so, will the secondary driver be involved in the selection? The second way to create higher gross profits is in the deal proposal stage. Disclose all figures to the customer: price, trade, difference, payoff, total balances, payments, down payments and terms.Preferably, you should show three payment options for every customer. You may give two payments at the same term but with different down payments and then one payment as a lease or with a different term. This proposal will allow a perfect alternative choice close at the end that allows the customer to save face if they don’t like either of the proposals. This will also allow customers to focus on what matters to them most. For most customers, this is their budget.Difference negotiating, trades or price leads to lower gross profits and lots of negotiating on things that won’t ultimately matter to the customer. When you negotiate solely on price, trade or difference, often the customer is not really closed even after agreeing on a figure because the budgets aren’t agreeable. When you give a proposal using budgets, make sure you are asking at least 25 percent down for one of the proposals. Down payment is a key to deal structure, gross profits and getting deals approved. People also will react better if you show down payment amounts and relate that to percentages. Percentages allow people to understand where the figures come from. Remember that between price, trade, down payment, payment or term, down payment is the only one that the customer controls 100 percent. The third area that will improve gross profits is to understand what to do at the customer’s first objection. You must know what to say and write when the customer objects to price, trade, down payment, payment, term or anything else. You must be prepared to the point that you don’t have to think or blink about what to do next. When the customer objects, never ask them what they were thinking or what figure they would like to be at. At best, this lowers gross profit but usually keeps the customer from buying because it creates a shopping mentality in the customer. When you ask a customer to give you a figure they will buy at, they either give you a low-ball figure or tell you that you are the sales person and you should tell them. At first objection, you must always verify and validate your original proposal. Otherwise, you invalidate yourself, your dealership and your proposal.Used vehicles are also the key to increasing your overall gross profit. Most used cars are under-priced from the beginning. Practicing price elasticity allows you to ask more than you currently are asking and finding that you almost always under-price your vehicles versus what people will pay. Gross profit is a state of mind, and price cutting is a self-inflicted wound.Creating higher gross profit also becomes much easier with good lender relations and a thorough knowledge of each lender’s buying parameters. Knowing which bank to send the deal to, how to structure it and asking the bank for maximum values are essential. The ability to obtain higher gross profits is part science and part art. You must understand the mechanics, but you must have the belief system to support the mechanics. One without the other will lead to the failure to obtain higher gross profits. To find out how Tewart Enterprises averages between $3,000 – $4,000 per vehicle email me with $4,000 in the subject line.

Anyone who owns a vehicle is all too familiar with the need for an auto tune up or automotive repairs. There is the regular need for oil change service, the need to check engine light from time to time and, of course, the need for auto AC repair ever so often. Testing is made convenient with written tests scheduled twice a year with a choice of more than 750 testing sites all over the US. Some computer-based tests are conducted at 200 locations also twice a year.Automotive service professionals and technicians who are ASE-certified are authorized to wear the blue and white ASE insignia. Their employers can also display their credentials in the shop and use the ASE signage. Auto repair shops are qualified for the elite ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition Program (BSRP) if they have at least 75% of their automotive service professionals and technicians ASE-certified, and if every service they offer is represented by a minimum of one ASE-certified technician. The ASE Blue Seal of Excellence comes with a wall plaque, counter mat and a promotional kit. The repair shop will also be listed in the BSRP shop locator of the ASE website. All ASE certified auto repair shops with the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence are evaluated annually so that certification credentials are always updated and maintained.Vehicle owners can, therefore, be assured of excellent service provided by well trained and highly skilled professional technicians when going to an ASE certified auto repair shop.
